BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science is the clinical discipline concerned with the assessment and treatment of patients in urgent and emergency situations, often before they reach a hospital. Paramedics work in a wide range of challenging environments, from emergency ambulance responses and major incidents to urgent community care, primary care settings, and specialist retrieval services. The role has evolved substantially in recent decades, moving from a largely transport-focused function to a highly skilled healthcare profession with significant autonomous clinical responsibilities. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time Paramedic Science degree prepares you for the role of a highly skilled healthcare practitioner capable of providing high-quality urgent and emergency care across a variety of settings. You will develop clinical knowledge and practical skills in patient assessment, diagnostics, pharmacology, trauma management, and the care of patients across the full age range, from newborns to older adults, alongside the professional and ethical frameworks that underpin paramedic practice. The programme is structured to develop both the academic foundation and the clinical competence needed to work effectively and independently in fast-paced and challenging environments. The entry tariff is 136 points. Graduation from an approved paramedic science programme and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council are the standard route to professional practice. Career destinations span NHS ambulance services, air ambulance and helicopter emergency services, primary care roles, urgent treatment centres, and specialist retrieval and critical care services. The paramedic profession is experiencing a significant expansion of scope, with many paramedics moving into advanced practice roles, prescribing, and clinical leadership. Postgraduate study in advanced clinical practice, emergency care, or leadership is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or management responsibilities.
