BA Visual Effects and Motion Graphics
About this course
Visual effects and motion graphics are two of the most technically and creatively demanding disciplines within the digital creative industries. Visual effects encompass the processes used in film, television, and advertising to create imagery that cannot be captured practically, from digital creatures and environments to the destruction of virtual worlds. Motion graphics apply animation and design principles to moving image content, creating the titles, overlays, explainer animations, and branded content that populate broadcast, digital, and advertising media. Both fields require practitioners who understand the principles of animation deeply and can apply them with technical precision. The three-year full-time Visual Effects and Motion Graphics programme at Teesside University builds your skills on the foundational principles of animation, which were originally developed by Disney and have been used by generations of animators to create convincing movement across movies, television, games, and commercials. You will study the fundamentals of 2D animation through hand-drawn techniques and the principles of 3D animation using industry-standard software and techniques including the layered method and pose-to-pose approaches. You will also delve into the history of animation and motion design, from its earliest beginnings to today's diverse styles and applications. A sandwich year and work placement give you professional experience within a studio or production environment before you graduate, which is essential in a sector where showreel quality and industry network matter enormously. With a typical entry tariff of 120 points, the programme is accessible to students who bring technical curiosity and creative drive. Graduates pursue careers in visual effects studios, post-production companies, broadcast design, advertising, games, and the digital content sector, working as VFX artists, motion designers, compositors, and technical directors.
