What you'd actually do

As a Resident Doctor, you work in a hospital doing hands-on patient care while completing your training. You see patients every day, assess what's wrong with them, check test results, and help make decisions about treatment. You work alongside senior doctors who teach you, and you support nurses and other staff to make sure patients are getting what they need. You also keep detailed notes of everything you do - a record that other doctors rely on.

The hours are long and the work is demanding - you might work nights, weekends or be called in for emergencies. You see people at their most vulnerable and sometimes patients don't get better. But you also see people recover, and you learn more in a year than you would in any classroom. You get expert supervision, and you're building the skills you need to become a specialist or GP.

Develop strong patient communication skills
The ability to explain a complex diagnosis clearly, navigate difficult conversations around prognosis, and maintain trust under pressure is something patients will always need from a human. Communication skills training, including breaking bad news and shared decision-making frameworks, will differentiate excellent residents from competent ones. AI can draft a letter; it cannot sit with a frightened patient and their family.
Consider subspecialties with sustained human demand
Psychiatry, emergency medicine, general practice, and surgery are all areas where human presence, continuity, and physical skill are structurally central to the role. Some imaging-heavy subspecialties may see more AI involvement in the diagnostic workflow over time, so it is worth factoring this into long-term specialty choices. Choosing a direction where human judgement and interpersonal skill are non-negotiable gives you additional career resilience.
